During the 60s, several fad dances appeared (such as the Twist and others) that effectively overtook casual pairs dancing. Freestyle is a term for any social dancing which is done without a fixed footwork pattern and without pairs contact, and describes most dancing that one might find at casual social dances or nightclubs.
